Movie Review: Serenity

Tracy and I went to see Joss Whedon’s masterpiece, "Serenity", tonight and it was excellent – definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time.

Joss Whedon, known for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" – both the movie and series – as well as the spin-off, "Angel", started a series called "Firefly" on Fox. It got a lot of attention but Fox pulled it before the first season was over with three episodes left to air. I suppose they had to make room for more reality TV. The series got deep into the characters and was full of drama, comedy, fantasy, and realism. Besides "Battlestar Galactica", "Firefly" was the only other sci-fi series or movie where ships don’t make noise in the vacuum of space.

He persisted and got a movie deal with all the original cast returning. The movie was much like the series but was written carefully to bring even the uninitiated close to the characters. The movie was made to be epic enough to stand alone as a movie but "Firefly" fans will find the same drama, whit, action, and comedy they grew to love.

What was very special is that leaving the theater I felt sad (I won’t give away why), relieved, and happy all at once. It was amazing and the effects were great.

It also had one of the better choreographed scenes in an action movie. Summer Glau, who plays the troubled genious River, gets in a fight with evil, crazed "people" called Reavers and is very graceful in what she does. I guess all that ballet really helped.

Another great character, Mal played by Nathan Fillion, comes into his own as more of a saint – not that there was much there to begin with before!

If you don’t like sci-fi you may not like this movie because for everything it is, it’s still science fiction. I do highly recommend this if you don’t mind or even love sci-fi whether or not you’ve seen the series "Firefly". It has all the elements of a great movie no matter what the genre.
