How to Thwart Tip Fraud

I’m not sure if I’ve ever been the victim of tip fraud – a server or host who makes simple adjustments to your tip and the total bill in their favor – but with the technique described at http://www.punny.org/money/fight-thieving-restaurant-servers-with-checksum-tips/ a la Bruce Schneier’s blog post I won’t have to worry about being a victim from this night on.

Basically, you sum the left digits and set the right-most number to the total. Adjust the tip accordingly. When your credit or debit card statement it posted, repeat the process and make sure that the sum of the left digits total the right-most digit. From the web site,

NICKY’S YUMMY RESTAUR $14.15 ← 1 + 4 = 5
OVERPRICED FOOD RES $36.49 ← 3 + 6 = 9
WE STEAL YOUR $ RESTA $61.06 ← 6 + 1 ≠ 6

If this happens, call your credit card company and the police.
