How to Thwart Tip Fraud

October 26, 2007 Leave a comment

I’m not sure if I’ve ever been the victim of tip fraud – a server or host who makes simple adjustments to your tip and the total bill in their favor – but with the technique described at a la Bruce Schneier’s blog post I won’t have to worry about being a victim from this night on.

Basically, you sum the left digits and set the right-most number to the total. Adjust the tip accordingly. When your credit or debit card statement it posted, repeat the process and make sure that the sum of the left digits total the right-most digit. From the web site,

NICKY’S YUMMY RESTAUR $14.15 ← 1 + 4 = 5
OVERPRICED FOOD RES $36.49 ← 3 + 6 = 9
WE STEAL YOUR $ RESTA $61.06 ← 6 + 1 ≠ 6

If this happens, call your credit card company and the police.

Today a BBQ, Tomorrow the Bite

July 23, 2006 Leave a comment
Well, technically the BBQ was yesterday since it’s 12:46 AM on Sunday. After a long day or sorting through our pictures of whales from the other weekend at San Juan, we made a 7-layer salad (more like 12 layers) and Rice Krispie treats and headed into Seattle for a BBQ at our friend’s condo with a magnificent view of Seattle.
Tomorrow we’ll likely go to the Bite of Seattle for more food and fun. If it wasn’t so hot, we’d take Suzie but she isn’t doing so well in this heat wave sweeping Earth.
I’ll post some choice whale pictures soon after today’s long selection and archival.

Anniversary Dinner at Sky City

May 8, 2005 Leave a comment

Last night Tracy and I celebrated our 3-year anniversary at Sky City atop the Space Needle, icon of Seattle.

The view was quite lovely and the food was fantastic! Tracy had the Pancetta-wrapped Prawns and I had the Angus New York Strip Steak, and we both had wines from Washington – Tracy’s choice comes from just a couple miles north of where we currently live. The steak was one of the best I’ve had (and both hailing from the Mid-west, we know a thing or two about steak) and was cooked perfectly. Tracy finished her dinner with a Apple Tarté a la Mode and I had the Creme Brulée topped-off with one of the best-looking strawberries I’ve seen (most likely fresh from the market).

It was a delicious and romantic night – that is until we came home to our neighbors throwing a party till well past 3:00 AM.

Sushi Land

April 16, 2005 Leave a comment

Tracy and I tried sushi for the first time with friends at Sushi Land in Bellevue, WA, last night. It was actually pretty good. I’ve already had a first taste of raw fish in a bento box in Redmond, WA, but never sushi. The experience was quite fun. The sushi (and other food) is paraded around a conveyor belt and you take what you like. We actually seem to have a taste for calamari and we even tried eel. It wasn’t too bad.
